She whirled in and out of the preschool Monday afternoon much as she did at the Port of Stockton. After a meeting with port officials, she addressed a small crowd of city leaders at the water’s edge, ensuring them she would fight for much-needed funding that will improve access to the 70-year-old port.

“I want you to know that I’m a great friend of this port,” she said in a brief address. She presented a flag to port officials, too.

Officials hope Boxer can help secure federal funding to upgrade the Washington Street access to the port and extend Daggett Road to the port.

Steve Herum, chairman of the Port of Stockton Commission, said officials also hope to deepen the Stockton Deep Water Channel to 40 feet to make room for larger ships and to improve the condition of the railway there.
