Biography:
A prominent national real estate developer and professional sports
team owner recently said, "When the rounds start falling, Jim
Brown is the guy I want in the fox hole with me."
Mr. Brown's record tells the story. More than one hundred trials,
in federal and state courts throughout the United States. Lead plaintiffs'
attorney in the two largest class action law suit settlements in
the history of the Central Valley.
Mr. Brown started his practice in 1975 at a small white collar criminal
defense firm in Reno, Nevada where he specialized in trials of federal
income tax evasion cases. He moved to the firm of Orrick, Herrington
& Sutcliffe in San Francisco in 1978 to work on securities and
antitrust cases. He formed the firm which later became Freeman &
Brown in Stockton, California in 1983 to establish the first plaintiff's
securities and antitrust litigation practice in the Central Valley.
Since then he has handled most of the significant antitrust, unfair
trade practice and securities class actions that have been either
brought or defended in this area. He has represented many of the
largest real estate development, financial service and agribusiness
firms in San Joaquin County in a wide variety of commercial litigation
cases as both defendants and plaintiffs.
Mr. Brown received his Juris Doctorate, cum laude (top 5% of his
class) from the University of San Francisco School of Law in 1975.
He graduated from the University of California at Berkeley, with
distinction and honors, in 1972. He attended the Robert Lewis Stevenson
School at Pebble Beach, California. He received a commission in
the United States Army, from which he resigned with the rank of
Captain.
Mr. Brown's great great grandfather was a United States District
Court Judge for the State of Colorado; his great grandfather was
a railroad and mining attorney in central Nevada; his grandfather
was a Nevada District Court Judge; his father, uncle, brother and
sister are all attorneys.
Mr. Brown's proudest accomplishment: His marriage to Norma June
Brown, mother of their two adult sons, Mike and Ben, for thirty-two
years.
